The term non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is used to describe the accumulation of fat in the liver (steatosis), as determined by imaging studies or histology, in the absence of significant alcohol consumption (less than 20 grams/day), use of steatogenic medication or hereditary disorders.
