HIV and infant feeding
Breastfeeding, especially early exclusive breastfeeding, is one of the most important ways to improve infant survival rates.
However, HIV-infected women can transmit the virus to their children during pregnancy or childbirth, and also through breast milk.
Existing evidence reveals that administration of antiretroviral drugs to the HIV-infected mother or HIV-exposed infant can significantly reduce the risk of transmission through breast milk and also improve the health of the mother.
Mothers living in places with a high prevalence of morbidity and mortality due to diarrheal diseases, pneumonia or malnutrition recommend breastfeeding should exclusively breastfeed their children until they are six months old, and thereafter add adequate complementary feeding and maintain breastfeeding until they are one year old.
