Yellow fever
Yellow fever is an acute, hemorrhagic, viral disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes. A small proportion of infected patients develop severe symptoms, and about half of these cases die within 7 to 10 days.
The virus is endemic in tropical Africa and Central and South America. Large epidemics of yellow fever occur when the virus is introduced by infected people in densely populated areas with a high density of mosquitoes and where the majority of the population has little or no immunity due to lack of vaccination.
Under these conditions, infected mosquitoes transmit the virus from one person to another. Yellow fever can be prevented with a highly effective, safe and affordable vaccine. A single dose is sufficient to confer lifelong immunity and protection, with no need for booster doses.
