Warning signs of suicide in older adults
Many people think it is normal to feel sad or to isolate themselves from others, but this may be due to mental health problems that can be treated. One in five people over the age of 60 live with a mental health condition.
Dementia and depression are the most common mental health conditions in this age group. Followed by anxiety disorders and alcohol abuse.
Older people are the age group where suicide is most common.
Pay attention to the appearance of changes in their behavior:
- Social isolation.
- Persistent memory complaints.
- Sleep disturbances.
- Excessive worries about illness and death.
- Anxiety of recent onset.
- Refusal to eat.
- Neglect of self-care.
