Tension Pneumothorax

In 3% of cases there is what is called a tension pneumothorax, when the pressure in the pleural space exceeds atmospheric pressure. This occurs when there is a valvular mechanism that allows air to enter the pleural cavity during inspiration, without emptying during expiration.
What should be done in case of pneumothorax?
Treatment options may include observation, needle aspiration, chest tube insertion, non-surgical repair or surgery. You may receive supplemental oxygen therapy to accelerate air reabsorption and lung expansion.
The survival of a person with pleural effusion has a life expectancy that usually does not exceed 6 months, which is why any palliative intervention aimed at improving the quality of life should have as a primary objective to avoid, as far as possible, hospital admission and relieve pain.
