Depression in pregnant women can translate into behavioral changes such as abandonment of prenatal check-ups, deterioration of the self-care needed during pregnancy, poor adherence to medical indications and the abuse of tobacco, alcohol and drugs, all of which can affect the fetus and obstetric outcome.
The lack of adequate management of depression can result in a physical, social and economic burden for the pregnant woman, the family and the health care system.
The best time to apply the Edinburgh Depression Scale is at eight weeks postpartum since it coincides with the period of maximum incidence of puerperal depression and also with the decrease in symptoms attributable to a normal adaptive period.
